SUNY Oswego would like to acknowledge the celebration and significance of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, observed from June 1 until June 30, as well as activities around the state supporting it.

Pride Month honors the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. The first Pride march in New York City was held on June 28, 1970, on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, and has expanded into a wonderful celebration for people in the LGBTQIA+ to embrace their identities, while remembering how far they have come in obtaining rights.

SUNY Oswego's James A. Triandiflou '88 Institute for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Transformative Practice invites you to celebrate Pride Month by learning more about its history. Check out @ozinstitute on Instagram in the coming days to learn more. Also, be sure to check out what is happening around New York State for the remainder of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month.

Incoming freshman Tyler Johnson is set to serve as the grand marshal of the CNY Pride Parade on Saturday, June 25. Johnson has become a model youth advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights after his high school denied him the right to publicly state he was gay in a school publication. This year, Johnson has taken CNY by storm and has led school board meetings, spoken at several social justice rallies, dropped the puck at the Syracuse Crunch Pride Night and received a scholarship from Live Out Loud for his activism.

The State University of New York system celebrates and invites members of the Oswego campus community to join them to March with SUNY at NYC Pride 2022 on Sunday, June 26. For this event in midtown Manhattan, SUNY shares its commitment to diversity and inclusion during an activity with millions of attendees. Registration to participate is available through June 24.
