As part of an ongoing commitment to providing a secure and efficient technology environment, Campus Technology Services (CTS) is excited to announce a campus-wide transition to Windows 11.
This upgrade will offer enhanced security features, improved performance and a more seamless user experience for everyone on campus. CTS understands that change can bring questions, and they are ready to support you every step of the way. Below, you’ll find important details about the transition timeline, support resources, and what you can expect as the campus moves forward.
Overview
Microsoft will be ending support for Windows 10 on Oct. 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will stop providing security updates to client devices, which puts those devices and the campus at risk. CTS has piloted migrating some campus computers to Windows 11 and is now ready to work with the campus to make a full migration.
Upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 involves planning a seamless transition to ensure minimal disruption to faculty, staff and students. The process includes determining hardware compatibility as only certain models are compatible, determining software compatibility and providing training on the new features. Windows 11 enhances system performance, accessibility features and security features, and offers a refreshed user interface with minor changes.
For employees
New computers
All new computers have had Windows 11 installed by default since summer 2024. CTS will continue to install Windows 11 on new devices going forward.
Already-deployed computers
For existing computers, it is important to note that Windows 11 has specific hardware requirements. To meet certain security requirements, only specific models can be upgraded. Please review the “Determining Hardware Compatibility” and “Determining Software compatibility” sections of the Windows 11 Migration Information page to help determine if your computer can be upgraded.
If your computer can be upgraded, please submit a Windows 11 Upgrade request to schedule the upgrade. Please back up your data and allow 2-4 hours for the upgrade to take place.
If after reviewing the migration information, you still aren’t sure if your computer can be upgraded, please contact the CTS Help Desk.
Incompatible hardware
If you have determined your computer model is not compatible with Windows 11, it will need to be replaced.
- CTS has worked with academic departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; School of Communications, Media and the Arts; School of Business; and School of Education during the Visiting Assistant Professor/Lecturer and Faculty Computer Replacements calls to help replace equipment as needed.
- Departments not listed above should plan for any needed hardware replacements. You can use the campus standard hardware quotes for budgeting and requisition purposes. Early planning will help ensure a smooth transition and help reduce disruptions. At the latest, machines should be purchased by Aug. 1, 2025 to allow for ordering, shipping, configuration and installation. You can also check to see if CTS has used inventory that could be used for replacements.
Training
CTS offered some workshops during the CELT-sponsored Winter BreakOut sessions and will also offer some during the Spring BreakOut sessions. Please check the CELT website for dates/times.
Self-training options include the following:
Windows 11 Quick Tips (36 min, LinkedIn Learning)
For computer labs and classrooms
CTS has installed Windows 11 in the majority of classroom and lab computers. The small number of remaining labs will be completed by June. Technicians responsible for maintaining departmental computer labs with specialized equipment should consult CTS prior to upgrading.
More information
CTS has a comprehensive Windows 11 Migration Information document that should help answer many questions. Windows 11 features, training information, and frequently asked questions are also included.
Feel free to contact the CTS Help Desk for questions.
