Thursday's Welcome Week activities will include the "A Tour of Black Excellence," a student-led program that seeks to connect new Oswego students to both past and present contributions that the Black community has made to Oswego and the surrounding area.
Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, with a dinner to follow, the event is hosted and organized by students Samisha Elysee and Tiffany Flores.
In socially distanced, limited attendance capacities, students will partake in a “scavenger hunt” focused on four campus locations. Students can start at Tyler Hall, Marano Campus Center, Rich Hall or the Shineman Center, and will receive more exact clues.
Before receiving a clue at a station, students will engage with a socially distanced educational module that focuses on the history and contributions of the Black community. Module topics include art/theater, wealth and financial literacy, cultural appropriation and STEM.
The tour will also feature a display of work from local Black artist Jaleel Campbell and individually packaged food items from local Black-owned restaurant Creole Soul.
The first 200 students to complete the tour will receive a free pre-packaged dinner from Creole Soul, with others being able to purchase a meal if they choose.
