As winter approaches, the following information will be helpful in the case of severely inclement weather impacting on-campus classes on the main and the Syracuse campuses.

As officially noted in SUNY Oswego’s 2023-2024 Student Handbook (page 135):

Classes at SUNY Oswego’s main campus in Oswego and Syracuse campus may be canceled due to adverse winter weather or prompt the university to declare a “remote” instruction day. When classes are canceled at SUNY Oswego or a remote instruction day is declared, faculty and commuting students are advised not to come to campus. In the case of a remote instruction day, all face-to-face and hybrid classes will be taught online according to your faculty member’s instructions. Online courses will continue as normal.

As the winter months unfold, the SUNY Oswego administration will continue to review weather forecasts, warnings and advisories, and consider all options (canceling classes or declaring a remote instruction day), always with the safety and well-being of all members of our campus community as our utmost priority.

The public announcement of class cancellations only occurs when the entire campus of thousands of students and faculty are affected. Faculty members wishing to cancel their own classes should follow the same procedure used when they are ill.

Please keep in mind that the university does not close when classes are canceled. Under the state’s regulations, only the governor has the authority to close a state agency such as SUNY Oswego. Unless the governor closes the university, employees who do not work that day are required to charge their time. The only exception is for instructional faculty when classes have been canceled.

The primary mode for learning of class cancellations or remote instruction days is our main emergency communication avenue, New York Alert. We encourage all members of the campus community to sign up to receive weather-related announcements and other important alerts by visiting the NY-Alert Contact Form to register or update your contact information.

For those existing users who are just reviewing their information, the "save" button is only activated if you make changes to previously provided data. If a change is made, you will see a message in the upper right-hand corner, identifying a successful save.  If you do not need to make any changes, you can safely exit that page without having to click "save."
