Rice Creek Associates, the support group for Rice Creek Field Station, invites the SUNY Oswego community and members of the public to attend a Nov. 7 virtual reboot of their annual symposium highlighting the scholarly work of small grants awardees. 

This year's format will be a Zoom Webinar that Saturday afternoon, with registration beginning Nov. 2 on the Rice Creek website. Presentations (pre-recorded) each last approximately 12 minutes followed by live Q&A with all presenters. 

The 2020 awardees include SUNY Oswego students, faculty and staff.

This year’s program is as follows, with start times approximate and an asterisk (*) denoting a student presenter.

  • 2 pm: Opening remarks by Dr. Kamal Mohamed, professor of biological sciences and Rice Creek Field Station director; Provost Dr. Scott Furlong; and Dr. Kristin Croyle, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • 2:10 pm: Pre-recorded 12-minute presentations begin, introduced by Dr. Maria Sagot, Rice Creek Associations Small Grants chair and associate professor of biological sciences, in the following order:
  • Cory Brosch, Kyle Dzintars and Ellen Gooch: SUNY Oswego Counseling ecotherapy outreach workshop series, Counseling Services Center, SUNY Oswego.
  • Emily Cieplik*: “Feeder color preference in Black-capped Chickadees”; Dr. Daniel Baldassarre (advisor), department of biological sciences, SUNY Oswego.
  • Lucas Deland*: “Determination of the rate of infection of Ophryocystis elektroscirrha upon Danaus plexippus in Oswego County, NY”; Dr. Karen Sime (advisor), department of biological sciences, SUNY Oswego.
  • Shawn Geary*: “A continuation of a long-term survey of Rice Creek amphibians for the prevalence of two global pathogens”; awardees: Drs. Jennifer Olori, Nicholas Sard and Susan Hammerly, department of biological sciences SUNY Oswego.
  • Ola Kraszpulska: “The Flora and Fauna of Rice Creek: a coloring book”; theatre department, SUNY Oswego.
  • Miryam Makutonin*: “Bioaccumulation of atrazine in freshwater mussels (Elliptio complanata)”; Dr. Poongodi Geetha-Loganathan (advisor), department of biological sciences, SUNY Oswego.
  • Sydney Waloven*: “Quantifying the relative contributions of intracellular and extracellular DNA to River Otter (Lontra canadensis) detection rates during summer and winter sampling events”; Dr. Nicholas Sard (advisor), department of biological sciences, SUNY Oswego.
