Denison University professor and author Heather Pool will talk about the ways that identity and responsibility are constructed in the wake of tragedy in her presentation "Political Mourning: 9/11 and American Identity," at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, in the Marano Campus Center auditorium (Room 132).

In her book "Political Mourning: Identity and Responsibility in the Wake of Tragedy," Pool asks what leads society to respond politically to the deaths of some citizens and not others.

Born out of her personal experiences with the trauma of 9/11, Pool’s astute 2021 book from Temple University Press looks at how death becomes political, and how it can mobilize everyday citizens to argue for political change.

Pool examines four tragedies in American history — the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the lynching of Emmett Till, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the Black Lives Matter movement — that offered opportunities to tilt toward justice and democratic inclusion.

The hybrid event also will be available to view via Zoom; visit the Events Calendar entry for more information.
