It is with sadness that I share the news that SUNY Oswego employee Dennis Quill passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 13, 2022. Dennis was a dedicated Instructional Support Technician for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).
Dennis worked in this position since the creation of the ECE department around a decade ago, working behind the scenes to make many others shine. For many of those years, he also battled cancer but “worked through these difficult treatments cheerfully,” said Marianne Hromalik, ECE department chair. He was knowledgeable on many subjects, and driven to help the ECE family succeed in many ways, including by securing a Technology Initiative Program (TIP) grant to provide a surface-mount soldering station for faculty research and student projects.
Hromalik praised Quill as a “great programmer who could fix almost any technical problem” but also “loved by students and always ready with help for their projects. He would be up all night working with them on Capstones.”
His work with ECE included support, training and installation of serial and network based transaction systems; IT duties ranging from systems administration to infrastructure installation and maintenance; precision machining and toolmaking plus maintaining the code base for utility applications.
Dennis was deeply loved by a large circle of family and friends. He loved to chat on many subjects and also played guitar, worked on perfecting barbecue techniques and used his considerable knowledge to help people whenever possible. He was contributing to a variety of research projects and working on finishing his computer science degree at SUNY Oswego to complement his associate’s degree from Cayuga Community College.
Our sincere condolences go out to Dennis' wife, Jennifer, and their extended family and friends. Information on memorial services is shared in Dennis' obituary.
