The SUNY Oswego community is saddened by the recent death of Dr. Walter B. Roettger, who passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2023. Roettger served as Oswego’s acting provost and vice president for academic affairs from April 2016 to July 2017.

As stated in his obituary, “Walter Roettger was a man of integrity, honor, sincerity, dry wit, even-handedness, and honesty to name just a few of his qualities.” Our condolences go out to Walter’s wife Peggy; his son Daniel; and their family and friends during this difficult time.

During his long career, Roettger served as the president emeritus of Lyon College and was employed at a number of other colleges and universities as a vice president, provost, associate provost and dean, among other administrative posts.

He received his bachelor's degree from Stanford University and doctorate from the University of Colorado at Boulder, both in political science. He served with the U.S. Air Force, leaving active duty with the rank of captain. He was first tenured at Drake University, where he received the Honor Teacher Award.

"Walter was a genuinely kind mentor who had a wealth of knowledge to share," said SUNY Oswego Officer in Charge Mary C. Toale, who was serving as the interim dean of Graduate Studies during Walter’s time at SUNY Oswego.

"He played an important role in leading SUNY Oswego’s Academic Affairs as acting provost,” said Scott R. Furlong, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management. "Walter was a wonderful resource for me as I was welcomed into the SUNY Oswego community. I valued his perspectives, advice and good nature."
