The Department of Student Engagement and Leadership (SEL) would like to congratulate Kelsey Jones on her opportunity for career advancement as she leaves SUNY Oswego to serve as the assistant director of civic and community engagement in the Office of Student Leadership and Engaged Learning at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Jones joined SEL in summer 2022 after serving as an academic success coach at Berkshire Community College.

In the two years the Oswego alumna has served as the program coordinator of Civic Engagement and Community Services, SEL said she has had an incredible impact on the campus. This role did not exist in its current designation prior to her serving in it, and Jones brought it to life in a way that created many opportunities for students to be involved in civic engagement along with service.

Highlights of the many impacts Jones had on campus include hosting the national “Rise Against Hunger” campaign during an expanded celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. the previous two Februarys. During this program, students, staff and faculty came together to prepare meals for those facing food insecurity -- this year 20,000 meals were prepared.

Jones also played a critical role in representing SEL with the Civic Engagement Coalition on campus and Vote Oswego.  Her impact was felt during the 2022 midterm elections, and she played a role in preparing the campus to participate in the national “All In Challenge” to have SUNY Oswego be a leader in both the number of students who register to vote and then actually vote in the 2024 federal election cycle.

She worked to build relationships to restore Oswego’s Alternative Break Trips that had not happened since 2019.  Additionally, she created a collaborative relationship between the Sustainability Office and the Fraternity and Sorority Community to develop the Arboretum on campus and an impactful Day of Service program for the spring semester.

For those who would like to share your well wishes with Jones, SEL will host a thank-you and congratulations event for her from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, in The Point, 131 Marano Campus Center.
