Allison Rank, associate professor of politics and Vote Oswego campaign manager, traveled to Washington D.C. along with four of Vote Oswego's fall 2024 interns – Halle Collins, Alexandria Herard, Samantha Kern and Emma White – to attend a White House convening on Youth Civic and Voter Engagement on Nov. 22. This event brought together faculty, staff, students and practitioners from around the country to share their experiences with and insights on nonpartisan civic and voter engagement work in the wake of the 2024 election. Francisco Suarez

Communication studies faculty member Francisco Suárez was recently named one of 10 emerging Hispanic leaders and allies who are fellows for the 2025 Hispanic Leadership Institute (HLI) class. “I think any new opportunity you have to grow, you should take it,” Suárez noted. “As a professor, I’m always promoting the idea of learning and finding ways to empower yourself.” HLI is a demanding nine-month experience which positions fellows to further develop higher education leadership skills and proficiencies. HLI fellows participate in training sessions and webinars, converse with national and statewide leaders, and master personal assessment tools. Read full story.

Physics and astronomy professor Carolina Ilie and 2024 graduate Hugh Riley Randall had a paper accepted for publication in American Journal of Undergraduate Research, titled "On the Center of Mass of the Half n-Ball." The paper started when Randall, who is first author, was ready to work on a challenging question proposed as a part of the “Advanced Classical Mechanics” course, Ilie said. A SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence in 2024, Randall is presently working on his Ph.D. in physics and astronomy at University of Rochester. 

Gwen Kay, director of SUNY Oswego’s Honors Program and a history professor, was part of a panel discussion, "Elevating the Honors Admissions Process: Engaging Diverse Communities of Students" (both for Developing in Honors, and again for Two-Year Colleges) at the 2024 National Collegiate Honors Council meeting in Kansas City on Oct. 31. With two other panelists, Kay spoke about the admissions process in Oswego’s programs, noting in particular about the university’s efforts to diversify the Honors Program, and growing the program through transfer and international students 

Kay and communication studies faculty member Serenity Sutherland participated in the 2024 History of Science Society (HSS) annual meeting in Merida, Yucatán, Mexico on Nov 7 to 10. Sutherland presented "Changing Approaches to the History of Science: Using Visual Methods to Address Women in Science" with David Nelson of the  American Philosophical Society. Kay chaired and moderated a roundtable "The HSS Annual Meetings at 100: Looking Back and Looking Ahead."

Damian Schofield, director of Oswego’s master’s in human-computer interaction (HCI) program, co-authored three recent papers with students.

  • Brittany Fialkowski and Schofield co-authored “Considering Color: Applying Psychology to Improve the Use of Color in Digital Interfaces” in Digital Interfaces, Art and Design Review: The paper aimed to connect the fields of color psychology and HCI, thus explaining how professionals in the field can utilize the advantages of this framework. 
  • Snigdha Behara and Schofield and co-authored “Investigating The Efficacy of Menstrual Health Applications In Promoting Informed Decision-Making And Comprehensive Sex Education” in the British Journal of Medical and Health Research. The paper investigated the efficacy of Menstrual Health Applications (MHAs) in the realm of reproductive health education.
  • Schofield and Hinal Shah co-authored “Investigating Graphical User Interfaces for Covid-19 Dashboards” in the Journal of Software Engineering and Simulation. With the importance of usability for informational dashboards arising through the COVID-19 pandemic, the paper assessed a number of popular dashboards and provided guidelines on improvements for future use.
