We are profoundly saddened by the untimely passing of Ziyah Myers ’23 earlier this month. Her countless contributions to our university community have left an indelible mark that will inspire and resonate for generations to come.
President Peter O. Nwosu said, “Ziyah was a passionate advocate for student engagement and an unwavering champion of celebrating the achievements of students of color. Through her dedicated service in the Black Student Union — as director of programming, vice president, and president; and as president of Two and a Half — she enriched the lives of so many. She also played a pivotal role as the co-founder of the annual Asiwaju ceremony, a tradition honoring graduating students of color.”
Having earned her bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Advertising, and Applied Communication, Ziyah continued her journey as a trusted graduate advisor while pursuing her master’s degree in Strategic Communications. Her commitment to her peers and to higher education reflected her extraordinary spirit and drive.
In her time at SUNY Oswego, Ziyah had a profound and enduring impact. In addition to working toward her degrees, she devoted herself to ensuring that students of color felt a sense of belonging and acceptance within our community. Her legacy enriches us all, and we are forever grateful for her dedication.
We have heard expressions of sympathy from virtually every corner of our university. Jessica Reeher, Ziyah’s advisor in the Department of Communication Studies, shared: “Each time I met with Ziyah, her infectious optimism and boundless positive energy brightened my day. We shared many conversations about her aspirations, her dreams, and the meaningful change she envisioned bringing to the world. Ziyah was a rare treasure, both as a student and as a person, and my life has been immeasurably enriched by knowing her.”
A viewing and funeral service for Ziyah will take place in Brooklyn. Please contact Harmony Funeral Home for more information.
