While spring break is traditionally a time of year for students to trade their textbooks for travel and/or relaxation, they also can spend that week doing something more meaningful through Alternative Spring Break trips.
Alternative Spring Break this March will offer opportunities for supporting environmental preservation or helping local communities, activities that might align with students' values and goals.
Option 1: Make a difference in Philadelphia with the American Hiking Society:
If you're someone who loves nature and cares about environmental sustainability, then this trip might be perfect. By teaming up with the American Hiking Society for a hands-on environmental preservation project in Philadelphia, you’ll spend your break volunteering to restore trails, plant native species and help protect the natural beauty of the area. Not only can you improve the environment, but you can gain valuable skills and contribute to long-lasting change. All transportation, housing and meals are included in the trip.
Option 2: Stay local and give back in Oswego:
Maybe you’re looking to make an impact right here in the hometown university's community. This spring break, take the opportunity to stay local while contributing to community organizations around Oswego. Whether it’s volunteering at local shelters, helping with food banks or working with youth programs, you can get an up-close look at how your efforts can truly shape the lives of your neighbors. Transportation and some meal allowances for the week are included in this trip.
Why participate?
Program organizers offered the following benefits of participation:
- Personal growth: Volunteer experiences teach leadership, problem-solving and empathy — skills that will serve you long after the break is over.
- Making a real impact: Whether you're planting trees in Philly or supporting local families in Oswego, your actions will directly benefit the environment and your community.
- Building connections: Meet like-minded students, form bonds over shared passions and network with organizations that can open doors for future opportunities.
How to get involved:
Spots for both trips are limited, so students are encouraged to sign up quickly. Visit the Alternative Spring Break website for more details, including how to apply and a breakdown of the costs associated with each trip.
Applying via this link can enable students to not just take a break but make a difference. Applications are due by Friday, Feb. 14.
