As students begin to think about moving home for the summer, SUNY Oswego’s Office of Community Services and the local People Against Poverty committee encourage students to “Leave Green.” Students moving out of residence halls are able to drop unwanted items in good condition in donation boxes at any residence hall, starting May 9, for a community sale.

Accepted donations are non-perishable food, clothing, bedding and small household items, including mini-fridges. Donations are collected and sorted by campus and community volunteers and sold back to the public at low cost during a community garage sale, which will run May 23 to 25 in Swetman Gym.

All proceeds are used by People Against Poverty to support anti-poverty efforts in Oswego County and any remaining items are donated to the Rescue Mission. On average, the annual sale saves almost seven tons of useful material from entering landfills.

To collect, sort and sell the seven tons of donated items, Leave Green needs helping hands. Volunteer shifts are available May 14 to 22 between the hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Interested volunteers can email service@oswego.edu to sign up or for more information.
