SUNY Oswego’s campus community thrives on diversity, inclusion and connection, bringing together students from all over the world. Among the remarkable individuals making an impact is Jigyasha Chataut, an international student from Nepal majoring in sociology with a minor in human development. Her journey is a testament to the vibrant and welcoming community that SUNY Oswego provides.
Chataut’s path to Oswego began with a dream of studying in the United States and a desire to work for an international organization like the World Health Organization (WHO). She chose Oswego for its high visa approval rate and reputation as a supportive institution for international students.
“Being an international student all the way from Nepal, the transition was initially challenging with the new environment and unfamiliar faces,” she explained. “However, the campus community embraced me warmly, making Oswego feel like a second home.”
Since arriving at Oswego, Chataut has immersed herself in campus life as a resident assistant and Laker Leader student orientation guide. In these roles, she has worked tirelessly to foster a sense of belonging among students.
“I focus on creating an environment where every student feels valued and heard,” she said. Through organizing events and activities, Chataut encourages students from diverse backgrounds to connect and learn from one another.
One of the most memorable events she helped organize was a Holi celebration, showcasing the vibrant and colorful festival from her home culture. The event brought together students from all walks of life to celebrate through music, dance and shared traditions.
“It was amazing to see students from various backgrounds come together to celebrate,” she recalled. “It broke down barriers and fostered cross-cultural friendships. Seeing everyone embrace the joy and spirit of the event was truly heartwarming.”
Beauty in diversity
Chataut credits her experience at Oswego with helping her grow both personally and academically. “The beauty of this campus is its diversity,” she reflected. “I’ve met people from all over the world — each with unique perspectives, traditions and stories. This has helped me grow as a person because I’ve not only learned about their cultures but also shared mine.”
Her studies in sociology complement her engagement with the campus community, deepening her understanding of social dynamics and equipping her with tools to promote social justice.
“Studying sociology at SUNY Oswego has ignited a passion within me for understanding social issues and advocating for change,” she says. “It has prepared me to work with diverse populations and to make a positive impact on communities.”
For prospective international students, Chataut offers heartfelt advice: “Don’t be nervous, don’t be shy. The SUNY Oswego community will accept you and your unique identity. Embrace challenges and participate in everything the campus has to offer. It’s an opportunity to grow, not just academically but personally.”
Chataut’s journey is a shining example of resilience, cultural connection and a deep commitment to making a difference. Her experience at SUNY Oswego reflects the vibrant campus community that welcomes students from all over the world — a place where they can build lasting connections, embrace new opportunities and shape their futures together.
