SUNY Oswego recently hosted the 93rd meeting of the New York State Geological Association (NYSGA) from Sept. 23 to 25, with nearly every Oswego geologist -- including many students -- contributing to the conference.

In addition to leading two day-long field excursions in the Adirondacks and Tug Hill Plateau, atmospheric and geological sciences faculty member Dave Valentino served as editor for the annual guidebook, and has served as the association executive secretary since 2012.

SUNY Oswego atmospheric and geological sciences faculty members Rachel Lee and Jon Fox, former SUNY Oswego faculty member Nick DiFrancesco (now with the University at Buffalo) and Roy Widrig of New York State Sea Grant's Oswego office also organized and led day-long excursions.

These included outings to McIntyre Bluff in Sterling for a lesson in drone operation, to the state's Southern Tier region to examine rocks related to New York state salt mining, to examine the erosion of the Lake Ontario eastern shore and to highlight the glacial features on the grounds of the college's Rice Creek Field Station.

Annually, since 1925, geology enthusiasts from across New York State have gathered in the fall to visit interesting geological features with organized field trips. The conference was only postponed during World War II and in 2020 due to the pandemic.
