SUNY Oswego recently earned the Community Partnerships, Community Service Award from the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA).
The NADIIIAA Community Service Awards program, established in 2001, is intended to recognize the many contributions Division III student-athletes regularly make to their campuses and local communities. Recognition is given for projects in three categories: One-Time Activity/Project, Special Olympics Activity and Community Partnerships, where the Lakers earned recognition.
In addition to presenting commemorative awards to the winning institutions, NADIIIAA will make up to a $1,000 contribution to the general scholarship fund at each of these institutions.
"We are truly honored to receive the Community Partnerships, Community Service Award," said Wendy McManus, SUNY Oswego's assistant vice president for intercollegiate athletics. "This recognition reflects the university's ongoing commitment to empowering our students to make a difference while fostering relationships that benefit both our campus and the local community."
Hundreds of SUNY Oswego student-athletes from all 24 intercollegiate athletics teams participate in a statewide community service project organized by Student-Athlete Advisory Council chapters at many SUNY Athletic Conference colleges. Through this initiative, local senior citizens -- including those who are physically challenged -- receive assistance with raking their yards, alleviating the burden of leaf removal.
"It's an incredible honor that our department does not take lightly. This award demonstrates the selflessness that SUNY Oswego Intercollegiate athletics exemplifies every day," said Merlin Joseph Jr., assistant athletic director for student-athlete success. "I am glad that our coaching staff and, most importantly, our student-athletes are being celebrated for having a positive impact beyond our campus. We appreciate their hard work and will continue to find ways to uplift the Oswego community through our services."
The Community Partnerships, Community Service Award, underscores the university's leadership in community service and its role in developing responsible and engaged citizens.
