“Best for Vets: Business Schools,” a ranking compiled by Military Times publications, recently named SUNY Oswego’s School of Business to the list for 2016.
Oswego came in at 47th among the only 77 schools of business that made the list nationwide. Military Times considered only colleges and universities offering graduate business degrees.
“We’re pleased that we made the list for the second consecutive year,” said Irene Scruton, director of MBA programs at SUNY Oswego. “Our entire staff here is very sensitive to the needs of veterans.”
“Best for Vets: Business Schools 2016” ranks schools for their commitment to providing opportunities for veterans.
When he was searching for such an opportunity, Jonathan Winaker, of Goshen in Orange County, asked for a recommendation from a Veterans Administration support group and learned that SUNY Oswego’s School of Business offers an online master of business administration degree and is tied in with a New York state veterans program for tuition assistance.
Winaker, currently a front-line manager for information technology serving a four-state area with the IRS in Manhattan, is a Marine Corps and National Guard veteran, twice wounded in deployments to Iraq’s Anbar Province.
He enrolled this spring in his first two graduate courses—management information systems and project management—in the effort to earn his SUNY Oswego MBA, which ranks 20th among online master of business administration programs in U.S. News’ 2016 “Best Online Degree Programs: MBA” rankings.
“Both of those courses are very much in line with what I do now,” said Winaker, whose goal is to rise to mid-level manager and beyond. Pointing out that the opportunity for financial assistance and the convenience of earning his degree online while working full time “are two pretty strong positives right there,” Winaker added, “I’ve already recommended the program to other veterans.”
Military Times also has named SUNY Oswego a 2016 Best for Vets College, ranking it among only 125 four-year colleges and universities nationwide for the second consecutive year.
About 150 schools applied for Best for Vets: Business Schools. Military Times, an independent publisher of news and information for service members and their families, relied on surveys of veterans, colleges’ responses on both the business schools and Best for Vets: Colleges surveys, as well as factoring in data from the Veterans Affairs and Defense departments and three Education Department databases. Overall, schools were evaluated in five categories: university culture, student support, academic outcomes and quality, academic policies, and cost and financial aid.
The University at Buffalo School of Management, the only other public institution in New York state on the list, ranked 35th.
