Q: How are you involved on and/or off campus?

I [was] Vice President of the Black Student Union and secretary for the Laker Poets Society, and [am] Vice President of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honors Society for Education,. I also do a lot of work for the SOFE [Student Orientation and Family Engagement] office. I work Laker Launch, orientation whenever I can. I've been a student mentor for two years. On my breaks, I work at the Upstate Medical University as a desk attendant for their Campus Activities Building (CAB).

Q: What are some of your favorite Oswego experiences?

My favorite classes [so far] are "Black Women Writers" with Dr. [Patricia] Clark, "Latina Writings and Theories" with Dr. [Roberta] Hurtado, "Literature for Young Adults" with Dr. [Rita] Radhakrishnan and "School, Pedagogy and Social Justice" with Dr. [Bonita] Hampton. All of these classes opened my mind up to new and different perspectives of others, and deepened my understanding of identity and beliefs in social justice. [My other] favorite experiences are working Laker Launch and going to the lake with my friends when it's warm enough.

Q: What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is so important to me because it gives us Black people a chance to recognize our achievements and accomplishments, and it's also important for other people outside of that community to realize the impact and influence that Black people have on our greater society, and just remember our importance and our worthiness to be here and do things that we do, and the accomplishments we have historically and currently.

Q: Do you have any other mentors you'd like to recognize?

Shout out to my high school English teacher Ms. Ray! She definitely made me feel like I wanted to be a teacher, in a way where I feel like it's progressive to teach. And shout out [again] to Dr. Hampton, Dr. Radhakrishnan and Dr. Clark.
