In addition to its traditional eight campus-based new student orientation programs this summer, SUNY Oswego traveled to Midtown Manhattan to deliver a special orientation program for Downstate New York students. More than 250 students and 125 family supporters attended the inaugural Downstate Orientation Program.
“Our students coming to us from Downstate New York have a long way to travel to start their experience as Lakers,” said Justin Dickerson, director of student orientation and family engagement. “We wanted to bring the program to them to save them money and show them that we value their commitment to Oswego this fall.”
“It was great to be able to bring a fun, comfortable experience to our Downstate students that felt so much like what we do here on campus all summer long,” said Jason Lin, a Laker Leader student orientation guide and a New York City resident.
Representatives from several offices on campus made the trip to Manhattan as well, including Corie Kohlbach, director of the Advisement Center, who noted: “What a great experience meeting students where they are! Truly a unique program. Parents and students were engaged with enthusiastic questions, gearing them up for the Laker experience.”
The Oswego team was surprised to meet SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr., who visited the Global Center during the program and made time to meet the staff and greet the newest Lakers. Chancellor King welcomed the family supporters of incoming students and introduced himself to all of the Laker Leader staff.
“Chancellor King’s presence was a surprise and such an honor,” said Maddy Knaack, coordinator of student orientation and success. “It truly shows the many levels at which people are excited about and caring for our incoming Lakers.”
