Bharat Ratra, a distinguished professor of physics at Kansas State University, will discuss the quest to find answers about the universe in "The 'Standard' Model of Cosmology … and Open Questions" at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, in Room 194 of SUNY Oswego's Shineman Center.

Award-winning poet Rebecca Dunham -- author of "Cold Pastoral: Poems," a collection that elegizes manmade disasters from the Deepwater Horizon oil platform to the Flint, Michigan, water crisis -- will join this fall's SUNY Oswego Living Writers Series, a roster that includes a playwright, nonfiction writer, novelist, short story writer and other published authors.

Oswego students are currently in Trinidad and Tobago designing prototypes for the Caribbean country's national musical instrument in the new course "Engineering the Steelpan," taught by electrical and computer engineering faculty member Marianne Hromalik.

SUNY Oswego public justice faculty member Jaclyn Schildkraut, a national expert on mass shootings, recently published a reference book that she hopes will prove helpful for anybody researching the topic.

A SUNY Oswego panel has recommended college mini-grant funding for five project proposals -- ranging from a multicultural effort to provide water purifiers to Puerto Rico to helping support a talk by an eco-poet known for her poetry about the disasters such as those at Flint, Michigan, and the Deepwater Horizon -- developed for Grand Challenges: Fresh Water for All.

SUNY Oswego will host a free public Mars Viewing Party, planned nightly though weather-dependent, from 11 p.m. [UPDATED START TIME] to 2 a.m. July 24 to 31 at the college's observatory at Rice Creek Field Station

Notable literature and a study-abroad course took 20 students in Creative Writing 395 -- “Norwegian Literature From Trolls to Thor, Ibsen and Noir” -- through remarkable reads and stunning sights in Norway and Iceland.
