Howard Gordon, the longtime executive assistant to the president at SUNY Oswego and a part of the campus family for more than four decades, gave an inspirational keynote speech Dec. 15 at December Commencement. Gordon, who retired in 2018, recalled being in the shoes of the graduates as a two-time Oswego alumnus, earning a bachelor’s in history in 1974, followed by a master’s in English in 1978.

Special guest Dick Oatts fronts the college’s Jazz Ensemble in a concert Dec. 6 at Waterman Theatre. The New York City-based Oatts, in town for his Dec. 5 Ke-Nekt concert with the Oswego Jazz Project, sat in with the ensemble to perform arrangements of his original music, features written for him and classic charts by the legendary Thad Jones. The annual fall concert also featured the small-group jazz ensemble and the Latin Jazz Ensemble. Music faculty member Eric Schmitz directs all three groups.

Ballerinas from SUNY Oswego and the Oswego community dance to a selection from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” Dec. 3 in Waterman Theatre. Dancers were directed by Ligia Pinheiro, who teaches ballet and other courses in the SUNY Oswego theatre department, while Juan F. La Manna of the music department conducted the College-Community Orchestra, also featuring selections from Mozart, Haydn and Copland. SUNY Oswego senior Gwen Healy performed as soloist in Cimarosa’s "Oboe Concerto."

Mihoko Tsutsumi, director of choral activities, conducts a performance of Mendelssohn’s “Magnificat” and other holiday music Dec. 4 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Oswego. The college-community Festival Chorus joined State Singers, Women’s College Choir, Men’s College Choir, Red Creek Selected Choir, Hannibal Senior High Chorus and Oswego High School Chamber Singers for the concert, which featured all of the singers and brass quintet for “Angels We Have Heard on High.”

Standing behind the first four international students (seated) to earn certificates in SUNY Oswego’s new year-round Intensive English Program are teachers, tutors, administrators, staff members and students currently enrolled in the program. The new program provides continuing opportunities to learn English via two 16-week semesters and two summer sessions -- four hours a day, five days a week -- of non-credit-bearing language and cultural knowledge. All of the students are encouraged to join clubs on campus and to otherwise seek out opportunities to enhance their English language skills.
