SUNY Oswego students pause with a resident and volunteers from Novelis during their local Alternative Spring Break project with ARISE to build a wheelchair ramp at an Oswego County home. Students' local projects for the week included helping Oswego County Opportunities prepare and deliver Meals on Wheels to local seniors; supporting Oswego YMCA projects, with volunteers from Exelon; and delivering a workshop with Oswego Health on smartphones technology for seniors at Springside at Seneca Hill.

Working with the American Hiking Society during Alternative Spring Break, students from SUNY Oswego help ready a trail last week in Virginia’s Pocahontas State Park, Other destinations for community service work included Alabama, Texas, the Dominican Republic … and several projects in our own backyard. During an Alternative Spring Break project March 16, SUNY Oswego students volunteer on Senior Technology Day -- an event organized by Oswego Health -- at Springside at Seneca Hill in the town of Oswego. Seniors received assistance with smartphones, getting on the internet, using tablets and laptops, accessing email, using Facetime or Skype with family members, and navigating YouTube and Instagram.

Student soloist Lisa Viviano, accompanied by pianist Robert Auler, professor and chair of music, performs “Oboe Sonata in D Major, Op. 166” by Camille Saint-Saëns on March 2 as part of the college’s annual “Collage” scholarship concert in Waterman Theatre. Faculty, student and community performers participate in the fast-moving concert that supports the SUNY Oswego Music Department Excellence Fund.

The College Community Orchestra under the direction of music professor Juan Francisco LaManna performs a selection from “The Firebird: Berceuse and Finale” by Igor Stravinsky at the March 2 “Collage” concert.

Author, performer and LGBT activist Sarah Kilborne speaks to Karen Oaks’ “Introduction to Gender and Women's Studies” class on March 6. The following evening in Sheldon Hall ballroom, she performed her featured cabaret-style work “The Lavender Blues: A Showcase of Queer Music Before World War II,” which highlights songs about sexual and gender fluidity from the early 20th century.

Students in several art classes and an English class put together a website featuring their effort to share the stories of nine SUNY Oswego students and alumni who are veterans.

Oswego State’s softball team (pictured against Wooster on March 16) competed in 10 games over spring break in Virginia and Florida. The Lakers finished their road trip with a 6-4 record. The team opened their season with a 16-0 win over the College of New Rochelle -- the most runs Oswego State has scored on Opening Day since April 4, 1987. With postponements and reschedulings always a possibility this time of year, the Lakers next are scheduled to play a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. March 28 at Hamilton. The Oswego State baseball team finished 6-4 during its spring break trip to Florida, bringing the Lakers’ record to 8-5 for the season. Junior outfielder Mike Dellicarri (pictured against Fredonia on March 17) batted .567 batting on the road trip.
