Oswego Mayor William J. Barlow Jr. (right) proclaims "Mary E. Gosek Day in the City of Oswego" for July 30, the birthday of the late passionate advocate for ovarian cancer research, detection and treatment. Mary, an employee of Campus Technology Services for 30 years, founded the not-for-profit Peaceful Remedies as she fought her own battle with ovarian cancer. Those gathered for the Sept. 27 open house at Peaceful Remedies' new offices in the McCrobie Building included (from left) Karen Goetz, executive director of Shineman Foundation; Assemblyman Will Barclay; Ed Gosek, Mary's husband and the Oswego State men's hockey coach; Kim Simmonds, president of Peaceful Remedies; the Goseks’ daughter and son, Sarah and Jeremy; and Barlow. Peaceful Remedies provides a variety of holistic services -- yoga, meditation, reiki, group sessions and more -- to bring peace to those fighting long-term illness.

Enthusiastic bowlers from Delta Phi Epsilon, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Phi Epsilon and Delta Sigma Phi show their enthusiasm Sept. 26 at a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity: Disaster Response on behalf of victims of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Members of the four organizations came together to sponsor the event at Lighthouse Lanes on East Albany Street in Oswego. Together with a donation from the D-Bus, the event raised $859. Distinguished Professor Richard Rosenfeld, chair and director of otolaryngology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, speaks Oct. 3 on "How to Read, Interpret and Perform a Systematic Review" to students in psychology faculty member Karen Wolford's "Introduction to Trauma Studies" class in Room 116 of Mahar Hall. Rosenfeld is an international leader in the development of best practice approaches and formal clinical guidelines for the evaluation and treatment of otitis media, which affects millions of children annually, causing a significant impact on hearing and linguistic development. A lifelong learner, Rosenfeld also is enrolled in SUNY Oswego's graduate MBA health services administration program. He is author, co-author, or editor of five books and over 300 scientific publications and textbook chapters, including those on understanding data and medical literature. Rosenfeld spoke later on "Common Sense Medicine: Timeless Principles for Better Health" in Penfield Library's Speakers Corner on the second floor.

Hundreds of runners and walkers make their way across the academic quad Sept. 30 during the Stride to Save Lives, a suicide awareness and prevention event and fundraiser for SAVE -- Suicide Awareness Voices of Education. Flag carriers, including the rightmost one, Michelle Hartshorne of Residence Life and Housing, represented Team RWB (Red, White and Blue), the Oswego chapter of a national organization that seeks to enrich the lives of America's veterans by connecting them with their community through physical and social activities. RWB and many others ran in memory of the late Oswego County Sheriff's Deputy Ian Kuhl, an Army veteran of Iraq who died July 30.

Helping open the Stride to Save Lives suicide awareness event Sept. 30, the college's Vocal Effect performs, directed by student Dionisio Burgos Jr. Stride to Save Lives founder and event chairwoman Jamie Leszczynski (in pink top, just behind the choir director in picture), a 2004 Oswego alumna, is among hundreds of listeners.

Members of this group hail from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Guinea, Haiti, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Macedonia, Madagascar, Philippines and Sri Lanka.

Murray won two awards recently and has seen interest explode in The Reading League, an organization she founded dedicated to evidence-based practices in the teaching of reading.

Comedian and writer Owen Benjamin, a native of Oswego, speaks Sept. 25 in Marano Campus Center auditorium as part of English and creative writing's Living Writers Series. An Oswego native and son of communication studies faculty member John Kares Smith and English and creative writing's Jean Troy Smith, Benjamin has appeared in such films as "The House Bunny," "Jack and Jill" and "All's Faire in Love." He has performed his unique standup and musical comedy on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," "The Tonight Show" and "Chelsea Lately." He was a lead character on the former TBS series "Sullivan & Son," and has a book coming out next year from publisher Norton Books.

Dining Services' annual donation of the Gatorade Sideline Package to Intercollegiate Athletics takes place Sept. 25 at the college's commissary. Auxiliary Services and Pepsi join to support the college's 24 NCAA sports teams with a package that includes branded 10-gallon coolers, ice chests, squeeze bottles and carriers, towels, 7-ounce cups and cases of Gatorade powder. Freshman midfielder Lacey Woite, shown racing up field against Elmira at home Sept. 13, notched two goals and an assist for the first time in her career in the Lakers' 3-2 win Sept. 27 at Morrisville. It was the Oswego field hockey team's fourth victory in a row, improving its record to 4-2 this season. The Lakers also were scheduled last evening at home vs. William Smith, and are set to visit Brockport at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Oswego State "B" golf team placed first at the Oswego State Fall Invitational on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, while the college's "A" team took runner-up. Sean Paul Owen (at far right in the front row) shot a 74 both days to earn first place in the individual category. The junior also placed first at the Elmira College Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 26, with a 71, the best score at that invitational since at least 2011-12. The Empire 8 Conference named Owen its Men's Golf Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 1. With back-to-back wins to finish the fall season, the Laker golf team will be back in action again in the spring.
