Daniel Wysocki, a 2015 Oswego physics graduate now on RIT's astrophysics team while pursuing his doctorate, delivers a Science Today talk Nov. 10 in Room 175 of Shineman Center. His presentation, titled "Seeing with Gravity: A New Era in Astronomy," dealt with the history of gravitational wave astronomy, from Einstein's predictions a century ago until today, the work he and the RIT team are doing connected to the Nobel-winning global project and future plans. Wysocki also discussed the major results to emerge in the past two years, from the properties of the individual observed black holes and neutron stars, to the astrophysical implications. Three leaders of the team that discovered gravitational waves received the Physics Nobel Prize for 2018.

High school senior Sarah Ginter (standing) and her father, Daniel, visiting campus Nov. 10 for the Veterans Day Open House, talk with School of Communication, Media and the Arts Dean Julie Pretzat (seated) at the Ask Oz pop-up student help center near the Hearth Lounge in Marano Campus Center. Provost Scott Furlong and Jerald Woolfolk, vice president of student affairs and enrollment management, announced the pop-up center aims to facilitate getting answers to various questions students may have on topics including financial aid, registration, student housing, selecting a major, the path to graduation, seeking employment, joining a club or athletics team, studying abroad and more. The work of the pop-up center is not a substitute for the important work going on between students, faculty and advisers, Furlong and Woolfolk said, but rather serves as an additional area of support and wayfinding for students.

Participants gather Oct. 23 in Sheldon Hall ballroom for the PDS (Professional Development Schools) Slam to celebrate another year of productive partnership among SUNY Oswego, Oswego County public school districts and CiTi BOCES. The evening starts with a series of three-minute "slams," where groups from each of seven school district partners present, with spoken word and dance routines, what professional development has been going on in their schools. Then the more than 50 participants visit the tables, one for each school district, where people can chat, browse materials, and learn more. The PDS partnership, under the umbrella of Team Sheldon, supports faculty from SUNY Oswego working in schools with teachers, the School of Education students placed in those schools and with the students in the classrooms.
