The online Master of Science in biomedical and health informatics (BHI) program serves as a gateway to an exciting and dynamic field, where you will gain comprehensive knowledge and skills. You will acquire innovative methods for assessing information practices, evaluating the distinctive requirements of healthcare providers and patients, and crafting advanced technology solutions to address the current challenges within the healthcare industry.

The immersive curriculum seamlessly integrates with our computer science programs, providing specialized coursework in health informatics and health information management, all while adhering to the rigorous standards set by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). This accreditation ensures that students not only enhance their careers but also emerge as well-rounded professionals equipped to meet the evolving demands of the healthcare informatics landscape.

As part of our program, you can choose from three distinct tracks, each thoughtfully crafted to address the evolving demands of todays healthcare settings.

Tracks

Health Information Management: Health Data Science

This track places emphasis on biomedical data analytics and practical applications. You’ll gain expertise in harnessing healthcare and public health data to enhance health outcomes for both individuals and communities. Key areas of study encompass data analysis and data science techniques, as well as tools for managing big data. Additionally, students delve into topics such as machine learning, statistical data analysis, spatiotemporal and signal analytics, text mining, data/reference terminologies, as well as models for data collection, storage and administration.

Health Informatics: Intelligent Health Systems

This track centers on the analysis, design, implementation, and management of intelligent and connected health information systems. Within this track, students explore a wide range of topics, including digital health, telemedicine, decision support systems, cognitive systems, artificial intelligence in medicine, smart health, mobile health and healthcare quality assurance.

Health Informatics: Professional

This track adopts a business management and administration approach to health informatics, allowing students to choose electives from our renowned Master of Business Administration programs. Throughout the program, students engage in courses like organizational management, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to apply fundamental business principles within the context of health informatics.

Application Requirements

Official transcript
Each applicant is required to provide evidence of a biomedical professional degree or the successful completion of a bachelors degree from an accredited academic institution (3.0 GPA for the last 2 years). Prior knowledge of statistics and computer applications is required. Students not meeting prequisites will be considered for admission and may be required to enroll in prerequisite courses through personalized advisement.

Submit official transcripts confirming your bachelors or masters degree/advanced certificate. This includes graduate-level coursework or post-baccalaureate degree/certificate. U.S. transcripts must be sent directly from the granting institution (electronic or mail). All international transcripts require verification via a 
World Education Services (WES) credit evaluation. If you are a SUNY Oswego alum, your official transcript will be automatically requested after entering your student ID and identifying SUNY Oswego as your school on the application upon submitting your application.
GRE scores (recommended)

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are optional, but help in evaluating your academics. Strong GRE scores allow your application to stand out.

Statement of purpose

In 500 words or less, describe your personal achievements relating to your academic interests, and detail your educational and professional objectives with reasoning for applying to SUNY Oswego. This statement will help the review team better understand and evaluate your application.

Resume

Include a professional resume or curriculum vitae that includes your academic history, professional background and any accomplishments of note. This document should provide details that support your admittance to the program.

Two letters of recommendation

Indicate two names with valid email addresses. We will send an email request directly to the references on your behalf. These references should be able to speak to your character, work ethic and abilities. 

Application fee

Prospective students are charged a non-refundable $65 fee for processing the application.

International admissions

Important: All international transcripts must be verified through a World Education Services (WES) credit evaluation as part of your application.

English Language Proficiency: Submit official TOEFL (79 overall, MBA 83) or IELTS (6.5) scores, unless exempt.

Visa and I-20 Documentation: After acceptance, upload your financial documents and passport copy to receive your Form I-20 for your visa application.
