IST Course Information & Community Service
IST 190/390 - Global Issues and Awareness is a one credit-hour requiremed course for all students living in the Hart Global Living and Learning Center. IST 190 is for freshmen and sophomores and IST 390 for juniors and seniors (and graduate students). If you live in Hart Hall you will automatically be registered for IST. You can find the IST syllabus here.
There is no textbook required for IST. This course requires attendance at six events per semester. The student then writes a one-page, double-spaced, reaction paper or participates in a discussion about each event they attend. There are hundreds of these events both within Hart Hall and throughout the campus each semester. These programs cover global issues about a variety of topics, including cultures, customs, beliefs, history, politics, and movements from around the world. The programs are also given in a variety of formats including presentation, lectures, demonstration, documentary, film, and discussion. Hart Hall residents can also fulfill one of their six required events by presenting on topics such as cultural backgrounds, international movements, beliefs and customs, etc. There is an online events calendar of "IST approved" events and students can go online and choose six events and attend them, depending on both interest and schedule. Fliers and posters for approved events will also be posted in Hart Hall and across campus.
Students are also required to complete 10 hours of approved community service per semester. You can find the Community Service requirements here and the Community Service Log is available for download.
