While words cannot undo the thoughtless acts of hate and violence that continue to plague our society, I am compelled and moved to share my deep sadness on behalf of the SUNY Oswego community. It is with profound sorrow that members of our university family mourn the five people killed and 25 others injured in this past Saturday’s shooting at Club Q, an LGBTQ night club in Colorado Springs. We also mourn the loss of 32 transgender individuals who have been killed in 2022.
SUNY Oswego condemns the senseless act of hate and the murder of innocent people. Our hearts are heavy. We share in the grief of the victims’ families and the entire LGBTQ+ community. The recent shooting comes on the heels of the brutal homicides of three student-athletes at the University of Virginia and four students at the University of Idaho.
These innocent lives must not be lost in vain. It is incumbent upon all of us to continue to uphold the values of the just, compassionate, supportive and active university community we are. Through our collective work, we must remain committed to positive change in the world by creating and maintaining an inclusive, equitable society where all people thrive and experience acceptance and belonging.
We must be better; we must eradicate ignorance and intolerance. We must choose love over hate.
