Dear SUNY Oswego Faculty, Staff and Students,

As we look forward to 2023, I am writing regarding Micron Technology’s announcement to build the nation's largest semiconductor chip fabrication facility in Central New York and SUNY Oswego’s engagement with Micron.

Micron’s investment will catalyze job growth, spur economic vitality, and present countless entrepreneurial opportunities and partnerships involving local communities, businesses, and higher education. SUNY Oswego is a vital partner as this investment evolves.

Over the past six months, we have been working to strengthen existing as well as forge new partnerships with Micron, our local, state and federal partners, legislative members, regional and state economic development partners, SUNY leadership, as well as with other higher education institutions in the region.

Our students, faculty, staff, academic programs, and expertise remain highly sought after for insight and innovation as well as for the inclusion and access we prioritize on our campus and across the region. Many of our academic programs are of particular interest to Micron and their labor needs, including engineering, arts, computer science, technology management, career and technical education, and business.

In November, members of the President’s Cabinet joined me and fellow Oswego County stakeholders to discuss forming the Oswego County Micron Strategy Steering Committee, of which SUNY Oswego is leading. The Steering Committee will create, unite, and implement Oswego County’s strategy to best support and mutually-benefit from the tremendous opportunity Micron presents. Workgroups are being created with leaders from across all segments of Oswego County to align and enact efforts to position Oswego County’s workforce, infrastructure, environmental and educational assets so that we all may capitalize on this unprecedented investment.

Earlier this month, members of the administration and faculty met with Dr. Robert Simmons, Head of Social Impact and STEM Programs for Micron Technology. We highlighted our academic offerings, talented student pipeline, and inclusion and equity-focused initiatives. As a result of our conversation, we are building a strategic approach to partnerships with Micron for decades into the future.
