In Memoriam: Dr. Al Stamm
Dear Members of our Campus Community,
It is with great sadness that I share the news of the recent death of Dr. Alfred (Al) Stamm, long-time Distinguished Service Professor of Meteorology at SUNY Oswego, who passed away on May 23, 2019.
Joining the Oswego faculty in 1977, Al was instrumental in the ongoing success of our meteorology program and its status among the best in the nation. A consummate teacher, knowledgeable researcher, and long-time campus leader, he also earned the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service, received the President’s Award for Scholarly and Creative Activity, and served as a member of the SUNY Distinguished Academy.
Al was involved in obtaining grants and launching initiatives that brought weather-tracking equipment, projects, and opportunities to Oswego students and faculty researchers. Al founded the meteorology honors program, and he inspired and encouraged countless students to take on research projects, apply for grants, and present at various conferences. His dedication outside the classroom was reflected in serving and leading numerous campus committees as well as his leadership and service to community based organizations.
Al earned his Ph.D. in meteorology as well as his master’s degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin, and his bachelor’s degree in physics from North Carolina State University.
We extend our sincere condolences to Al’s wife, Virginia (Ginny), children, family and friends during this difficult time. Information on memorial services will be shared once they become available.
