Dear SUNY Oswego Campus Community,
Our thoughts are with Jacob Blake, a 29 year-old Black man who was shot in the back multiple times by officers from the Kenosha, Wisconsin Police Department (KPD) on Sunday. This horrible act clearly reveals that we, as a nation and as individuals, still have much work to do to end the cycles of institutionalized violence against BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) individuals and communities. As I wrote to the campus on May 29, 2020 in an email titled Collective Stand for Justice and Peace, “we must be agents of a vastly better future.” I, along with our dedicated faculty and staff and committed alumni, will stand with you in our collective pursuit of justice, equality and peace.
I want every member of this campus community to know you are not alone; we are listening and we are here for you. As an investigation into this matter unfolds and we all offer hope for Jacob's recovery, let us channel our pain into nonviolent solidarity. If you would like to talk with anyone regarding this incident, please reach out because we want to engage with you in continuing to identify ways to make our campus, our community, our nation and all our lives more just, more safe, more inclusive and more peaceful.
