The Office of the President
November 7, 2020

Dear Members of the SUNY Oswego Campus Community,

We are aware of and are investigating recent reports of campus and city racist incidents. We have also increased current safety and surveillance measures.

We are investigating a disturbing photo/video filmed two weeks ago that is now being shared on social media in which an unidentified person appears to be wearing a KKK style hood in a City of Oswego neighborhood. While not taking place on our campus, this image is oppressive, racist and unacceptable. We are also investigating reports of virtual events that have been “Zoom bombed” by individuals who have made derogatory, vile and reprehensible remarks in the chat.

Let me make it absolutely clear; we have zero tolerance for such behavior. We will pursue all appropriate action for violations of the Student Code of Conduct.

Our University Police have increased surveillance of the campus and are partnering with the Oswego Police Department to elevate safety patrols in our community. In addition, the incidents on Zoom are being investigated, and Vice President Howland and Student Association President Lizeth Ortega are working with Chief Technology Officer Sean Moriarty to create training for student groups and event organizers to secure Zoom events. They will be sharing more information this week.

Our staff in Student Affairs and the Counseling Center are available to students should you need any resources or support. We will continue to closely monitor any reports where the safety and well-being of any member of our campus community is in question.

Here at SUNY Oswego, as we toil to learn and grow, let us be united in the desire to move forward together with respect for one another and in peace.

Please be safe and well.
