Campus Server Hosting Personal Websites to be Decommissioned June 1

Campus Technology Services (CTS) will be decommissioning the “Rocky” server on June 1 at 7 a.m.  Its primary service of hosting personal websites has seen less usage as more modern, alternative technologies have become available.   

“Rocky” had its campus origins in the 1990s as one of the first ways in which the SUNY Oswego community could publish their own personal website.  This collection of personal websites have often been referred to as “tilde websites” due to the requirement of using the tilde character (~) as part of the web address, for example: www.oswego.edu/~name.  

“Rocky” has also been used by faculty teaching web development and for providing access to weather data and certain library services.

As part of the decommissioning, CTS will be working with individuals and departments to move services to other servers.  Those who have content in their personal websites will be contacted by CTS individually to determine if they’d like to save it or transition it to Google Sites.  

Historical info: “Rocky” was part of a suite of servers in the 1980s and ‘90s named after the "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends" television series that aired in the 1950s and ‘60s.
