The New York State Education Department requires seven workshops to be completed for certification eligibility. Candidates typically complete this requirement prior to graduation as these workshops are required by programs prior to candidates completing field components. The workshops are offered at SUNY Oswego in the formats listed below. Candidates register for the course(s) through MyOswego during the semester recommended by their academic advisor. Teacher preparation programs require all seven workshops, Education Administration CAS, School Counseling and School Psychology must complete the DASA 1020 workshop course to be recommended for certification.
Safe Schools, Health Students (SSHS)
Safe Schools Health Students (SSHS 1020) satisfies six of the workshop requirements:
- Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting
- School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE)
- Fire and Arson Prevention
- Highway Safety and Traffic Regulations School Safety Patrols
- Child Abuse Prevention
- Prevention of Alcohol, Tabacco, and Drug Abuse
This requirement is met for most candidates by taking the online Safe Schools, Healthy Students (SSHS) course.

Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
The Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) is also a NYSED required course that will address the social patterns of harassment, bullying and discrimination, marginalization and microaggressions. DASA 1020 is a 6 hour class of which 3 hours must be face-to-face. Students who do not take DASA 1020 at SUNY Oswego, must take it with another approved provider. Go to the NYSED DASA-applicant website for a list of these approved locations. Candidates who complete the DASA workshop elsewhere need to submit the original Certification of Completion to Shelly St. John in the Registrar's Office at 301 Culkin Hall to have it entered in their records.
