History
Function
Pathfinder Dining Hall opened in September 1967 as the first dining hall on “New Campus,” or West Campus. It was opened to serve Seneca Hall and Cayuga Hall when they also opened in the fall of 1967. To combat the unpredictable weather at the college, tunnels were built connecting Pathfinder to its accompanying residence halls.
Namesake
Similar to its sister dining hall, Littlepage, Pathfinder Dining Hall was named after a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper, who spent time in Oswego while serving in the Navy. The third book chronologically in the Leatherstocking Tales, The Pathfinder was originally written in 1840. Alternatively titled The Inland Sea, the story takes place in the area around Lake Ontario, bearing the alternate title as a reference to the lake.
