Participants in this hands-on session will learn about the capabilities and shortcomings of generative AI tools and will learn how to create AI prompts to generate useful responses. While we will be using ChatGPT in this session, the same procedure will also work with other generative AI models.

This session provides an overview of the connection between higher education and civic engagement with a particular focus on what we know about the political knowledge and behavior of college students, the best practices for civic engagement in higher education, and strategies for how faculty and staff in range of disciplines and programs - including those not considered “political” - can meaningful incorporate civic content and skills into their work with students. This session is particularly recommended for faculty and staff who are interested in but have not previously incorporated civic content or skill building into their work in an intentional way.

Academic Freedom and the 2024 Election

This session features a discussion of SUNY’s approach to academic freedom with a particular focus on the obligation faculty have to engage in disciplinarily relevant discussions of public policy, political issues, etc. Time will be reserved for audience Q&A. We encourage attendees to skim two short pieces prior to the session: Nancy Thomas’ “The Case for Academic Freedom: Students, Opinions, Faculty Standards” (2017) and Matt Reed’s “Academic Freedom and Freedom of Speech” (2023).
