Rameen Mohammadi, and Michelle Bandla will discuss some of the most common problems that occur when advising students. This can help you assist students in navigating through the general education requirements at SUNY-Oswego.

Allow CTS to introduce you to the new suite of Google applications SUNY Oswego has recently subscribed to. Locally dubbed “LakerApps powered by Google,” the suite includes Gmail for email, Calendar, Docs for file storage and file collaboration, and more. LakerApps is available to all faculty, staff and students. We will give a demonstration of each of these apps and review what is required to transition to LakerApps. All users will need to transition from current SUNY Oswego web-based email and calendaring to the new LakerApps web-based email and calendaring components by September 30, 2010.

Description:
In this workshop, become familiar with the email features of LakerApps Gmail including basic composition of messages, conversations, use of labels as folders, customizing settings, creating vacation messages and signatures. We will also demonstrate creating contacts, spam filtering and the built-in chat capability.

Too many students are approaching graduation with problems that could have been avoided. In this workshop, Associate Provost Rameen Mohammadi and Associate Registrar Shelly St. John discuss how these reports should be used to help ensure that your advisees graduate in a timely manner.

A demonstration of the LakerApps Calendar app will be given at this workshop. Features such as creating one-time and recurring events, sending meeting invitations, creating multiple calendars, viewing others’ calendars, and tasks will be reviewed.

Description:
The LakerApps Docs app, composed of file storage, creation and collaboration, will be demonstrated in this workshop. With file storage, you will see how files can be easily uploaded into LakerApps for easy access from the web. With file creation and collaboration, you will see how easy it is to create your own documents and/or work with other people on a team document. Allow others in your team to make changes to your document or simply give them view-only access.

Session Title: "Using a wiki in place of term paper assignments"

Description:
Students in Eco 322 (History of Economic Thought) have always been given writing assignments in which they discuss the role of specific economists or schools of thought in historical context and as part of the evolution of economic theory. In the fall 2009 semester, students were assigned to create public wiki pages in place of traditional term papers. Peer feedback on the wiki pages were provided through ANGEL discussion boards. These wiki pages, together with primary sources, became the basis for class presentations and discussion. This workshop will present an overview of the successes and problems associated with this approach.

Google Wave offers interesting possibilities as an online collaboration tool. A "wave" is an online multimedia conversation that can be accessed synchronously or asynchronously. It combines aspects of e-mail, wiki, blogs, and IM platforms. In this presentation, John Kane will demonstrate some of the features of Google Wave and lead a discussion of how this may be used in support of instruction.

Session Title:"Using social bookmarking and RSS feed readers to help organize your web use"

Description:
On how many computers do you store bookmarks? How well organized are these? Have you ever tried to get back to an interesting website that you just can't seem to find again?
In this workshop, participants will create Google Reader and Delicious accounts and learn how to use these services to more easily organize and find information on the web. Google Reader makes it possible to easily view new information posted at your favorite web sites, blogs, and news sites, Delicious allows you to save, index, and access web bookmarks from any computer or mobile device that is connected to the internet. A discussion of how these may be used for class and research use wiill also be provided.

Session Title: "Creating an Avatar in Second Life"

In this hands-on session, individuals will create an avatar in Second Life, learn how to customize the avatar's appearance, and learn how to navigate around this virtual world. Participants will learn how to communicate and how to find people, places, and events occurring this virtual environment. Participants will receive a tour of the SUNY-Oswego Second Life island and visit a few interesting sites.

The widespread adoption of smartphones with GPS capabilities has enabled a wide variety of geotagging applications that provide users with information on people, places and things at specific geographical locations. In this workshop presentation, Tim Nekritz, Oswego's director of Web communication, will demonstrate and discuss several smartphone apps that provide geotagging services ... and their potential implications for consumers and businesses.
