Indigenous People’s Day is a day to honor the past, present and future of Native people and communities throughout the United States. It is a day to reflect on the culture, history and narratives around indigenous people.

The recognition of Indigenous People’s Day (or in some states it is referred to as American Indian Heritage Day or American Indian Heritage Day) started with South Dakota in the late 1980s. South Dakota has a large indigenous population and started having conversations about rights for indigenous people. 

"Welcoming and Working with New Americans/Refugees," a hybrid presentation at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, will explore how to welcome and work with New Americans and refugees using inclusive practices at the worksite.

As part of supporting SUNY Oswego’s strategic plan and its initiatives, the Auxiliary Services board of directors invites applications for grant funding aiding programs that help to create a vibrant campus community.

These funds must be used in the current academic year, ending at May Commencement. Applications are available online via this link and are due by Oct. 15, 2022. 

SUNY Oswego's student-run literary journal The Great Lake Review opens its submissions for all students -- and reminds all that their deadline is tonight.

The Great Lake Review accepts art, drama (screenplay, stage plays), poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction pieces. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7.

The month of October is recognized as National Italian Heritage Month. In 1989, Congress recognized and President George H.W. Bush signed through Proclamation 6045 that the month of October would be recognized as the month to observe the Italian American heritage and culture. 

The month of October was chosen at the time to overlap with Columbus Day which recognizes Christopher Columbus. Columbus is recognized as Italian because he was born in Genoa, Italy.  

LGBTQ+ History Month, not to be mistaken with the Pride observance in June, is a month-long celebration of the history of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community and the importance of civil rights movements in the pursuit of LGBTQ+ rights. The observance was founded in 1994 by Rodney Wilson, a former history teacher at a Missouri high school.

Following its emergence, LGBTQ+ History Month was added to the list of commemorative months in a resolution forwarded by the General Assembly of the National Education Association in 1995. 

A new twist on classic theatre canon will unfold when the SUNY Oswego Theatre Department season opens with a staged reading of “I F***ing Hate Shakespeare” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7 and 8, in the Tyler Hall lab theatre.

Admission is free for this production, which is directed by theatre faculty member Steven Mazzoccone from a script by Genia Femia.
