2011 Symposium on Teaching and Learning
Seventh Annual SUNY-Oswego Symposium on Learning and Teaching:
Using clickers to enhance learning
This workshop will focus on an examination of how the use of clickers may increase student learning and engagement in the classroom. An overview of the evidence of the effectiveness of this clicker use and a demonstration of how clickers can be effectively used will be provided.
Mentoring Undergraduates
The workshop will include an overview of the programs on campus that are currently focused on mentoring undergraduate research. There will be a highlight of available resources to support interested faculty and the benefits. This will be followed by experienced mentors sharing their own success stories and an open discussion for all participants as a way of identifying the way forward for undergraduate research mentoring on our campus.

The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching offers various workshops and seminars for new faculty and staff. While these workshops are designed for new members of the college community, any faculty or staff member is welcome to attend. Fall semester workshops include:
Thursday, September 8 - "Jumpstart on Teaching" - John Kane (4:00 - 5:00 pm, 123 Penfield)
Using Game Structures to Establish Community in a Classroom
In this workshop, Rebecca Mushtare will share her experience with using game structures in classes of approximately 30 students. Motivate, challenge, and establish collaborative practices using the strategies that game designers use.
“Reacting to the Past” (RTTP)
In this workshop, Anthony Contento will examine the "Reacting to the Past" pedagogical approach. "Reacting to the Past" (RTTP) consists of elaborate games, set in the past, in which students are assigned roles informed by classic texts in the history of ideas. Class sessions are run entirely by students; instructors advise and guide students and grade their oral and written work. It seeks to draw students into the past, promote engagement with big ideas, and improve intellectual and academic skills.
Google Hangouts
With the activation of Google Hangouts in the oswego.edu domain, we have a powerful new tool to conduct text, voice, phone, or video conference calls. Hangouts may be initiated from a computer, an iOS, or an Android device). Video calls are capped at 15 simultaneous users.
In this session, we will demonstrate how:
- Google Hangouts may be enabled on your computer,
- to initiate and invite others to a hangout,
- to invite people to join a hangout from their phone,
- to join existing hangouts.
