Shineman Oswego Scholarships to support local residents attending SUNY Oswego

Thanks to underwriting from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation, a new scholarship will support Oswego County students attending SUNY Oswego, starting this fall.

For fall 2024, the Shineman Oswego Scholars program will award 25 scholarships to local students for $2,500 per year for up to four years. Starting in fall 2025, the program will provide 10 $1,250 renewable scholarships across the county.

Each of the county’s nine school districts has two recipients, with another seven awards available in open competition throughout the county.

June welcomes Pride and Caribbean American Heritage Month

This column will highlight both awareness and address some community engagement opportunities.  

Penfield Library resource sharing (ILL) undergoing summer maintenance

In an effort to maintain patron privacy and keep the ILLiad database (one of the systems used for processing Interlibrary Loan requests) current and running efficiently, Penfield Library will perform a series of procedures during the summer of 2024. No interruption in service is expected as a result of this work.

Mallory Bower named director of EXCEL

I am pleased to announce that Mallory Bower has been appointed as director of EXCEL: Experiential Courses and Engaged Learning after serving as interim director for the past year.

Mallory joined the SUNY Oswego community over 10 years ago. Most recently she served as the assistant director for experiential curriculum and assessment in EXCEL. She supported the department through experiential curriculum development and strategic planning for high-level retention programs.

Openings available for Sheldon Institute, STEAM Camp summer programs

Registration is open for the two youth-focused hands-on learning opportunities in Barbara Shineman Summer Scholars Summer Camps' Sheldon Institute and STEAM Camp.

With these programs, the goal is for children to learn, explore and have fun. 

For either camp, young participants can be dropped off between 8 and 9 a.m., with student pick-up running until 5 p.m.

Cooper Hall network maintenance scheduled for June 13

On Thursday, June 13, from 8:30 to 11 a.m., Campus Technology Services (CTS) will perform network maintenance. Cooper Hall's wired and wireless connections to the campus network and Internet will be unavailable during this timeframe.

Campus listening sessions scheduled for Vice President of University Advancement search

As noted in President Peter O. Nwosu's letter last week, SUNY Oswego has retained RPA Inc., a national executive search firm, to assist with the Vice President for University Advancement search with current Vice President Mary Canale's scheduled retirement.

RPA Inc. will conduct listening virtual sessions at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, and 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, where they will ask different groups of stakeholders' questions to help them better understand the opportunity and SUNY Oswego so that they can best recruit.

Civic lesson plan faculty mini-grants available

With higher education having an important role in promoting civic engagement and civic discussions, SUNY Oswego is working to emphasize the importance of such civic-mindedness, and providing a mini-grant opportunity for the campus to help in these efforts.

Instructors sought for popular Sheldon Institute

The popular Sheldon Institute summer camp, running July 22 to 26 and July 29 to Aug. 2 this year, in search of creative instructors to inspire learning for students entering grades 2 through 10.

Organizers are looking for teachers, experts and enthusiasts to work with the students and provide courses of the instructor's choice. The institute is not just looking for the typical educational curriculum, but courses where instructors might have a special talent and passion to share with participants.

Juneteenth payroll update

In observance of Juneteenth on June 19, the Payroll Office announced that payroll will be distributed ahead of schedule.


Please note that payments will be available on Tuesday, June 18, in recognition of this important holiday.
